EduVOD is a content delivery solution to deliver e-Learning content to schools via satellite, terrestrial, IP or mobile data broadcast networks. The solution is hosted at a broadcast data centre, and manages the receipt, processing and delivery of digital content assets over the broadcast network. These assets are then received at the school by means of a satellite dish or terrestrial antenna or directly if using an IP network, decrypted and stored on a local server PC in the school. The e-Learning assets are then made available via the schools WiFi network to tablets and PC’s for use by learners. All types of e-Learning content can be delivered, such as e-Books, audio and video files, pdf documents and interactive learning materials with assessment modules,

  • Electronic Learning (e-Learning) is technology-assisted learning and teaching using a variety of digital learning media such as e-books and audio and video learning content.
  • Typically these e-Learning assets will be available on a student tablet or PC so that the learner can engage and interact with this content.
  • Interactive e-books allow for video and audio content to be “embedded” in the digital book, as well as interactive content such as quizzes and assessments which can be accessed via the e-book.
  • The results of these tests are stored electronically against the learner profile in order to measure and manage each individual learners performance and required intervention areas of the curriculum. This data can be integrated into a National Education Management Information System.
  • E-Learning content is widely available and covers most subjects and school grades, and has been developed by professional teachers who are experts in their field.
  • The Eduvod system also offers offline e-Research tools such as Wikipedia and a variety of WiFi accessible learner information media for project research.
  • As such e-Learning content can provide valuable assistance to the teacher in the classroom by giving learners the ability to view and / or interact with content presented by different teaching professionals

In remote areas, where IP connectivity, such as Fibre, DSL or GSM is not available, the Eduvod system has a unique capability in that it is able to use satellite content delivery. The advantages of this are as follows:

  • The ability to deliver content to schools in the Africa context faces two major challenges – reach and cost – content files can be very large, and consume data.
  • A typical satellite will cover all of sub-Saharan Africa under one footprint – that is why TV operators use satellite – whereas mobile or IP networks may not have good coverage.
  • The cost of a satellite channel is not cheap, but it is a fixed cost irrespective of the number of schools it delivers content to – so it makes sense in large scale deployments.
  • VSAT (two way satellite comms) is the most expensive, and only cheaper that satellite broadcast for a small number of schools.

The Eduvod system and content is installed in a school, and the content is available to any user device via WiFi using the device’s browser, or to PC’s connected to the LAN in the school.
